HARVARD BOOK PRIZE

Joel Bettigole BA '56  CHAIRMAN

"The Harvard Prize Book has, since 1910, been an important and effective way of attracting the attention of talented young people to the opportunities available in Cambridge. This was originally the primary purpose of the Prize Book movement. . . .It has outgrown its original intent and now represents, in over a thousand schools, one of the highest awards a school can make to a student in the junior class. [Harvard] is pleased at the number of Prize Book winners who choose to apply to (the College), but to us, it is perhaps even more significant that in these schools across the country the name of Harvard, and implicitly, our concern and respect for intelligence and variety of achievement, is linked with the name of hundreds of promising young students."
Fred Jewett'57
Dean of Harvard College, 1985-1995
Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, 1972-1985

The Program

As defined by the Harvard Alumni Association, the Prize Book is to be awarded to an outstanding student in the next to the graduating class who "combines excellence in scholarship and high character, with achievement in other fields." The award is usually made at the school's graduating exercises, with appropriate remarks by a local alumnus or alumna. The Prize Book may also be awarded to outstanding high school teachers, who inspire curiosityand excellence in students.

The Future

A Harvard Prize Book is presently offered annually in almost 1,700 schools around the world. Hoping that the number will continue to increase, the Harvard Alumni Association urges all clubs to inform their members about thisopportunity to underwrite the cost of a Prize Book. To help maintain Harvard's tradition of diversity, it is important that a special effort is made to reach schools outside traditionally covered areas. An expanded Prize Book Program can strengthen relations between Harvard and secondary schools and encourage talented young men and women to consider attending Harvard.
