 Dwight Miller, Senior Admissions Officer

A Three Decade Harvard Admissions Window on Arizona

Dwight D. Miller will offer his perspective on Harvard admissions and how the process has changed since his arrival at the Admissions Office in 1967.  Dwight will update the Harvard Club of Phoenix on changes in financial aid, the admissions process, and Harvard's goals for future classes of college students.  Our speaker will explain how Harvard is working to diversify the student body as the odds of admission are steadily declining.  Dwight graduated from Yale College in 1959 and served in the Marine Corps and as a teacher before joining the Harvard Admissions Office. He served as the admissions officer for many members of the Harvard Club of Phoenix, so this will be your chance to ask him what he was really thinking!

Lunch and Lecture on the Health Care System
Harvard Club
What:

You are invited to attend a lecture on the U.S. health care system.

Stanford Professor Laurence Baker will consider key challenges facing the U.S. health care system in the context of national health reform discussions. This session will focus on the ways capacity and structure of the health care system -- the number and organization of doctors, hospitals, and pieces of new expensive equipment, among other things -- influence health outcomes and spending, and the resulting implications for policy and politics.

Laurence Baker is chief of Health Services Research at Stanford University, a professor of health research and policy, and a CHP/PCOR fellow. As an economist interested in the organization and economic performance of the U.S. healthcare system, his recent research has focused on the drivers of medical technology diffusion, the costs and benefits of new advanced technologies, and opportunities to improve the efficiency of the U.S. health care system. His research has also examined the role of financial incentives, the effects of regulation, efforts to improve quality, and policies that affect the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

SOLD OUT “Lucy’s Legacy: The Quest for Human Origins”
Issues Forum
What:

Donald Johanson is the Founding Director of ASU's Institute of Human Origins. Many consider him to be among the most important and accomplished paleoanthropologists of our time. Over the course of his illustrious career he has produced some of the field’s groundbreaking discoveries, including the most widely known and thoroughly studied fossil find of the 20th century -- the Lucy skeleton.

Dr. Johanson's presentation will be a fascinating tour of the last three decades of study -- the most exciting period of paleoanthropologic investigation thus far. In that time, Johanson and his colleagues have uncovered a total of 363 specimens of Australopithecus afarensis (Lucy’s species, a transitional creature between apes and humans), spanning 400,000 years. As a result, we now have a unique fossil record of one branch of humanity's family tree -- a tree that is believed to date back a staggering 7 million years. Focusing on dramatic new fossil finds and breakthrough advances in DNA research, Johanson will provide the latest answers that post-Lucy paleoanthropologists are finding to questions such as: How did Homo sapiens evolve? When and where did our species originate? What separates hominids from the apes? What was the nature of Neanderthal and modern human encounters? What mysteries about human evolution remain to be solved?

Adélaïde Labille-Guiard: A Woman Artist in the Age of Revolution
Harvard Club
What:

Professor Laura Auricchio spoke to Harvard Club of Phoenix at an excellent event two years ago, and she will be back in the Valley on January 27, 2010.  Auricchio is a Harvard graduate and Assistant Professor of Art History at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.  She will trace the story of the fascinating woman portraitist that painted the Phoenix Museum of Art’s Madame Adélaïde.  Dr. Auricchio will shed new light on one of the few women ever admitted to France’s Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture.  Her recently published book fills major gaps in the scholarship of art and woman artists in the age of the French Revolution.     Laura Auricchio received her A.B., summa cum laude, in 1990 from Harvard College, where she lived in Cabot House and served as President of the Harvard Gilbert and Sullivan Players. She completed her PhD in art history at Columbia University in 2000. Her dissertation, funded in part by grants from the Fulbright and Whiting foundations, was the first extended study in English on the eighteenth-century French woman artist Adelaide Labille-Guiard. The life and art of Labille-Guiard, an active participant in the political and aesthetic debates of the French Revolution, form the subject of her first book and her upcoming talk.

Harvard Club Annual Dinner: An Evening at the Wrigley Mansion with Terry Goddard
Harvard Club
What:

Please join us for this year's Harvard Club of Phoenix Annual Dinner at the Wrigley Mansion Club as we welcome one of our own, Terry Goddard (A.B. '69), attorney general of Arizona, to discuss his vision for the future of Arizona.

Mr. Goddard and his family have been instrumental in Arizona's growth and development during much of this state's history.  Mr. Goddard, whose father was Governor of Arizona in the mid-60's,  first entered Arizona politics in 1982 and served as Mayor of Phoenix from 1984 to 1990.  Afterward, he received the Arizona Democratic Party's nomination for Governor in 1990 and served as Arizona Director for the US Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1995 - 2002.  In 2002, he succeeded Janet Napolitano as Attorney General and has lead successful and ongoing efforts to fight drugs, prosecute polygamist cult leader Warren Jeffs, improve border security and most recently stem the flow of guns feeding Mexico's violent drug wars. To borrow from a well-known Arizonan, it is safe to say that Mr. Goddard's body of work, although significant, is not yet finished, so his perspective should be both enlightening and entertaining.

Join us in hearing Mr. Goddard speak about where Arizona has been and where it might be going in the future.  Members, non-member alumni and their guests are welcome to join us for an evening of cocktails, dinner and each other's company.

Cocktails and Hors D'Oeuvres will be served between 5:00 and 6:00 followed by a dinner of salad, Pan Roasted Chicken Breast with Honey Champagne Sauce and, for dessert, cheesecake with chocolate sauce.  A full cash bar will be available throughout the evening.

In the spring of 1945, an American soldier named Kurt Klein liberated 21-year-old Gerda Weissmann from Nazi rule – and then fell deeply in love with her. This remarkable true story of love, loss and survival, set in post-war Europe and America, has been told in books (All But My Life; The Hours After; A Boring Evening at Home) and in an Oscar-winning documentary (HBO’s One Survivor Remembers), but never before on stage. See and discuss highlights from the collaborative “Moment Work” development process with acclaimed director Leigh Fondakowski (head writer/director, The Laramie Project), writers/producers Bennett Singer ‘86 and Ellen Gordon Reeves ’83 HGSE ‘86 and an ensemble cast including Lynn Cohen (Golda Meir in Steven Spielberg’s film Munich; Magda, Miranda’s Ukrainian housekeeper, in Sex and the City). Watch innovative theater in the making as Gerda’s Lieutenant takes shape, juxtaposing poignant love letters written by Kurt and Gerda after the war with moving reminiscences of their life together and recent interviews with Gerda, 84, who now resides in Scottsdale.
